If you’re like me then you’re the type of person who wants to see the item first, touch it and then test it before shelling out money to purchase. I am still a fan of buying from retail stores even with the advent of online shopping. You can call me old fashioned and everything but I see to it that I test the item first before deciding whether to purchase it or not. I take time also before buying anything. I make sure that my hard earned money won’t go to waste.

I Did Some Research

I am currently looking to purchase a new HDTV and I figured I might as well go out of my comfort zone and start considering alternative options to my preferred way of shopping. Recently I talked with a friend who’s the exact opposite of me. He buys everything online. We got into talking about the advantages and disadvantages of online shopping and buying from retail stores, specifically one of the largest online stores, Amazon.com. Here’s what I found out.

My 2 Cents About These Online Stores

When it comes to price Amazon.com is actually cheaper. When I say cheaper I mean there is a really big difference, we’re talking about hundreds of dollars here. Imagine how surprised I am when I found out that the HDTV I was drooling over which I saw in Best buy for the price of $2799 retails for only $2499 on Amazon.Com. Plus, they don’t even charge tax. The delivery is also for free. They also have what’s referred to as “white glove” delivery which means they won’t just deliver the product at your doorstep; they will also set it up for you.

You can really make sure that the product will work because they won’t leave until you test it. Now isn’t that just sweet? The only downside is you need a PayPal account or perhaps a credit card to pay for your online purchase. Now when you get your TV from the retail store all you need is hard cash, pay up and then drive home with your new TV. You won’t have to wait long to watch your favorite team’s basketball game on HDTV. The TV will come with you when you go home.

The Myth About Warranty

Amazon.com also offers warranty just like your retail store. However, Amazon.com themselves will not be responsible for the warranty but the manufacturer of the TV. So if the TV you purchased is a Samsung, then Samsung will be responsible for the warranty not Amazon.com. If your TV does get damaged you’ll have to send it to the manufacturer so they can repair it for you. Now this is such a big hassle for customers. Imagine having to ship a device as big as an HDTV. Retail stores are a great advantage when it comes to this. The retail store will repair whatever device you purchase from them and pretty much all you need to do is put the HDTV in your car and then drive down to the store.

Test Your Product Virtually

You won’t get to test the product when you buy from Amazon.com. You’ll just have to be contented with looking at the pictures and reading the description. When you go the retail store you can have the salesperson turn it for you and see for yourself how the HDTV looks like, not that there’s really a big difference with how the HDTV looks like in person than in pictures but anyhow you get to see the real thing. Now this is a bad thing for me. It’s hard for me to part with my money without seeing the real thing. I’m such an old fashioned guy.

I guess I’ve made my point with the things I’ve explained earlier. Regardless if you’re the retail store type of guy like me or the internet savvy buyer you really need to make sure that you understand the contract if there is any, understand the warranty and ask the important questions before buying the product. Don’t purchase any product, especially a big ticket item like an HDTV, without making sure of things first. If you don’t then you’ll live with regret and I’m sure you don’t want to regret something as big as an HDTV. Whatever you do, whatever you buy and wherever you buy, be a smart shopper.
